NEWARK, NJ – NJIT men's and women's fencing team's won seven out of their eight matches on Sunday as they hosted their first home event of 2017 at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
The men went undefeated hosting MACFA B vs C with victories over William & Mary (22-5), Haverford (15-12), Johns Hopkins (16-11), Navy (24-3) and Maryland (19-8).
NJIT and Johns Hopkins were the two remaining undefeated teams in the MACFA conference coming into this event. With their sweep the Highlanders are ranked number one going into the championships hosted by Johns Hopkins next week.
The NJIT women went 2-1 overall in their NJIT Invitational defeating William & Mary 18-9 and Navy 14-13 and falling to Army 16-11.
Foil fencer
Simon Rizell posted the most wins for any Highlander on the day, going 12-1 against all five teams. The junior won six bouts before losing his first match.
Eduardo Ezcurra and
Tristan Decker both finished 9-0 on the epee strip.
Brothers
Robert Slawinski and
Thomas Slawinski combined for a 11-4 record on the saber strip.
On the women's side, epee specialists
Julia Garcia and
Maria Sztan both recorded 9-0 records on the day.
Following suit was foilst
Jule Shigihara who also performed perfectly with a 9-0 overall record.
The Highlander men will compete at the MACFA Championships on March 5, and will try to capture the title for the second consecutive year.
Four NJIT women's fencers will compete at the NCAA Regionals on March 11, Shigihara, Garcia, Sztan and newcomer
