Lehigh Tops Visiting NJIT


BETHLEHEM, PA—Lehigh's Quinci Mann led all scorers with a game-high 15 points, leading the Mountain Hawks to a 64-50 win over visiting NJIT on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Stabler Arena.

Mann, who scored nine of her 15 points in the first half for Lehigh (6-4), finished the game 6-for-11 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Sophomore Gena Grundhoffer scored 12 points to go with six rebounds.

NJIT (0-9) was led by redshirt junior Tatianna Torres, who netted 13 points on 5-of-12 from the field followed by Taj Lewis 12 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman Dez Allen chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.

Both teams traded baskets early in the first quarter with the Highlanders holding an early edge after the first 10 minutes, paced by Taj Lewis with eight points.  NJIT's Dez Allen knocked down a three-pointer to knot the quarter at 14-all and Lewis closed out the quarter with a second chance bucket with two seconds for a 16-14 lead.

Lehigh scored seven straight to open the second quarter, taking a 21-16 advantage.  Torres sparked the Highlanders 5-0 run with a three-pointer deep from the top of the key and pair of free throws, pulling NJIT within two, 23-21.  Guard Amber Morgan cut the NJIT deficit to one, 24-23, at the 5:26 mark, taking her defender to the basket.

The Mountain Hawks scored five consecutive points for a 29-24 lead with 3:50 left to go in the quarter.  NJIT scored four points in the final thirty-nine seconds of the quarter, pulling within two of the home team, 33-31.  Torres led the Highlanders with five points in the quarter.

Lewis led all scorers at halftime with eight points followed by Torres with seven while the Mountain Hawks were paced by Quinci Mann and Bernadetter Devaney with seven points apiece.

Lehigh used a 13-2 spurt to open the third quarter for a 46-34 advantage.  NJIT's Dez Allen scored the first points for NJIT in the second half at the 6:40 mark and Torres scored five straight for the visitors, slimming the Mountain Hawk lead to nine, 46-37.

NJIT's Lewis cut the lead down to single-digit after a pair of buckets, 49-41, but a jumper by Gene Grunhoffer put Lehigh ahead by 10, 51-41.

Lehigh scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, extending the Mountain Hawk lead to 56-41.  Allen and Torres scored a bucket each for NJIT, cutting the lead down to 56-45 with 7:01 left to play.

The Mountain Hawks began to pull away from the Highlanders, 64-45, using an 8-2 run, sparked by Grundhoffer's basket at the nine minute mark.  NJIT got to within 11 with 7:04 to play but Lehigh rattled off eight straight over the next two and a half minutes to open it up to a 19 point lead, 64-45 lead with 4:30 left. NJIT added five points in the final two minutes to cap the scoring.

The Mountain Hawks shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) from the field and held NJIT to 34.5 percent overall and just 2-for-11 from three-point range.

NJIT, which will wrap up its three-game road trip on Sunday at Binghamton.  Tipoff slated for 1pm.
