Saint Peter’s Tops Highlanders, 59-52

NEWARK, NJ—
Saint Peter's had four players reach double-figures paced by guard Talah Hughes with a game-high 13 points to lead the Peacocks past NJIT, 59-52, Sunday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Wellness and Events Center.

Saint Peter's improves to an even 2-2 on the young season while the Highlanders, still in search for its first win of the 2017 season, fall to 0-4.

In addition to Hughes, Sajanna Bethea recorded a double-double netting 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while D'Aviyon Magazine and Zoe Pero chipped in 11 and 10 points apiece for the Peacocks.

NJIT was paced by freshmen Ellyn Stoll's 12 points (one shy her personal-best mark) while senior forward Taj Lewis added 10 points.  Stoll was the game-leader with four assists.

Sophomore forward Danielle Tunstall added eight points and shared game-high honors with 11 rebounds.  Redshirt junior Tatianna Torres chipped in eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

After the first 20 minutes of action, NJIT led the visiting Peacocks, 25-22. 

Saint Peter's outscored the Highlanders in the opening stanza, 13-7, as the Highlanders came out on top, 18-9, in the second quarter, to hold a 25-22 advantage heading into intermission.

NJIT edged Saint Peter's in the third quarter, 13-10, taking a six-point advantage, 38-32.  The Highlanders pushed it lead to eight, its largest lead of the contest, 33-25, after a layup by Lewis at the 6:26 mark.

Saint Peter's exploded for 27 fourth quarter points led by Magazine with 11 points. The Peacocks used a 13-3 run, slimming the Highlander lead to within four, 41-45.  After a Lewis layup, Saint Peter's scored five consecutive for a seven-point lead, 50-43.

Stoll's three-pointer at 2:28 brought the Highlanders to within four, 46-50, but the Peacocks took its largest lead of the game, 57-48, with 17 seconds remaining after a pair of free throws by Magazine.

NJIT will return to action on Wednesday when the Highlanders travel to West Point, NY and visit Army West Point.  Tip is slated for 5pm.
