Kennesaw State Wins Fifth Straight at NJIT

NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Kennesaw State won its fifth straight match of the season, sweeping NJIT, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16), Friday evening in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.

The Owls move to 8-1 in the ASUN, 14-4 overall while the Highlanders drop to 1-8 in the ASUN, 11-15 overall.

With the win over the Highlanders, Kennesaw State clinches a spot in the 2017 ASUN Women's Volleyball Tournament.

Anaiah Boyer paced the match with 12 kills for the visiting Owls while Madeline Johnson combined for a .429 hitting percentage, posting seven kills on 14 attempts with just one error.

Kennesaw State setter Kristi Piedimonte was one dig shy a double-double, registering 24 assists and nine digs, including three block assists.

As a team, the Owls combined for 42 digs, led by Piedimonte with nine followed by Maddie Jones (8), Katarina Morton (7) and Boyer (5).

In front of the net, 6-foot-4 middle blocker Liesl Engelbrecht led the match with four block assists.

The Owls held a 6-2 advantage in the service ace category, led paced by Jones and Karlee Groover with two each.

NJIT was led by sophomore Madi Busler's seven kills followed by Tess Albyn with six. 

Sophomore setter Liz Benson notched 20 assists while defensively, libero Adriana Nieto registered a match-best 11 digs followed by Alahna Diaz with 10.

In the first set, Kennesaw State took an early 8-3 lead but the Highlanders came back to tie the score at 17.  The Owls surged on an 8-2 run to close the set out 25-19.

Kennesaw State led 9-7 in the second frame and used a 7-0 run to open up a big lead at 16-7. The Highlanders got back within three points later in the set, but three straight points by Owls closed out the set 25-19.

In the third set, NJIT used an early run to go up 13-9. The Owls finished the set off on a 16-3 run to seal the victory.

NJIT will return to action on Sunday at 1pm, hosting Lipscomb in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
