NJIT Sweeps Visiting Saint Peter’s

Post Game Interview w/ seniors Albyn and Armada

NEWARK, NJ—Three Highlanders registered double-digit kills led by senior Tess Albyn with 16 kills in NJIT's 3-0 sweep over visiting, NJIT, Tuesday evening in women's volleyball non-conference action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.

NJIT sweeps the season series from Saint Peter's, improving to 11-14 on the season, which matches it wins-out from a season ago, while the visiting Peacocks, in search of its first win of the season, drop to 0-24.

The Highlanders won in straight sets – 25-9, 25-15 and 25-21.

Albyn finished with a .560 hitting percentage on 25 attempts followed by classmate Alyssa Armada with 13 kills and Iva Mandic with 10 kills.  Armada finished with a .462 hitting percentage.

Sophomore setter Liz Benson combined for 45 assists while junior libero Adriana Nieto paced the match with 13 digs.  Alahna Diaz followed with 10 digs.

In front of the net, Mandic and Mikalah Hughes combined for four total blocks (all assists).

Saint Peter's was led by Alexus Sharp's six kills.  Setter Imani Spicer piled up 14 assists while libero Karla Seda produced a team-best nine digs.

Sharp led paced the Peacocks with three blocks (all assists).

In the first set, the Highlanders combined for a .630 hitting percentage, led by Albyn with six digs.  NJIT jumped out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back, taking a 25-9 victory.

Armada led the Highlanders in the second frame with eight kills, as the set saw three lead changes.  After a 14-14 tie, NJIT used an 11-1 spurt to close out the frame, 25-15.

In the final set, Mandic and Albyn combined for nine kills in the win.  Saint Peter's took control early, 5-1.  The Highlanders rallied back to tie the match at 10-all and pushed ahead, 20-16, after consecutive kills by Albyn.
Saint Peter's inched it way back late, but NJIT's Mandic put away the match with a kill for a 25-21 victory.

NJIT will return to ASUN Conference action this weekend, first hosting Kennesaw State on Friday at 7pm and Lipscomb on Sunday at 1pm.  Both matches will be played in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
