NASHVILLE, TN—Lipscomb swept visiting NJIT, 3-0, Friday evening in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at Allen Arena.
NJIT, coming off a mid-week victory over Delaware State, fell in straight sets Friday 25-14, 25-22 and 27-25. The Highlanders fall to 1-5 in the ASUN, 10-12 overall while Lipscomb moves to an even 3-3 in the ASUN and 9-9 overall.
Lauren Anderson led Lipscomb with nine kills and seven digs while Megan Kuper and Chloe Roger each notched eight kills. Kuper combined for a .533 hitting percentage on 15 attempts and no errors.
Setter Morgan Elmore just missed notching a double-double, piling up a match-best 32 assists and eight digs.
Defensively, Elmore and Brittany Thomas led the team with eight digs while Kuper combined for five total blocks.
NJIT's senior
Tess Albyn paced the match with 11 kills followed by
Iva Mandic and
Mikalah Hughes with six kills apiece.
Liz Benson recorded 25 assists and five digs while junior libero
Adriana Nieto recorded a match-high 16 digs. Hughes combined for three blocks (all assists) followed by Albyn, Busler and
Alyssa Armada with two blocks each (all assists).
NJIT held a 5-1 advantage in the service ace category led by Busler two aces.
The first frame, both teams traded points, which saw three early ties, the last at 12-12, on a kill by
Mikalah Hughes. Lipscomb scored 11 consecutive points and used a 13-2 spurt to close out the set to earn the 25-14 victory.
In the second set, Lipscomb jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The visiting Highlanders rallied and scored six straight points, taking a 6-5 advantage. Lipscomb used a 7-1 run, pushing ahead, 12-7, after a kill by Samantha Rubal.
NJIT cut the Lipscomb lead to four, 14-18, but the Lady Bisons still in control, extended its lead to 21-16, resulting in a Highlander timeout. NJIT inched its way back into the set, 20-23, after a kill by
Tess Albyn but the home team held on to take the second set, 25-22.
In the third set, after a 5-5 tie, the home team used an 8-2 spurt to push ahead, 13-7. The Highlanders went on a short 4-2 run, slimming the Lipscomb lead to four, 11-15. Lipscomb took a 20-16 lead after back-to-back points by the Lady Bison but the Highlanders rallied to pull within one of the home team, 20-21, on a kill by
Madi Busler.
The visitors went on a late 3-1 spurt to knot the set at 23 after two consecutive errors by Lipscomb. The set saw three more ties, the final at 25, and Lipscomb scored the final two points, to earn the 3-0 sweep, 27-25.
NJIT will have a quick turnaround and travel to Kennesaw State on Saturday at 7pm.
