Visiting Jacksonville Sweeps NJIT


NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Jacksonville swept NJIT, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.

The Dolphins remains undefeated in the ASUN, moving to 3-0, 8-7 overall, while the Highlanders stand at 1-2 in the ASUN, 9-9 overall.

Jacksonville won in straight sets Sunday—25-19, 25-23 and 25-17.

NJIT senior Tess Albyn led the match with 14 kills followed by seven from Madi Busler

Setter Liz Benson just missed posting a double-double, combining for 31 assists and nine digs.

Sophomore Olivia Welsch paced the Highlanders notching 10 digs followed by Benson (9), Adriana Nieto (7) and Busler (6).

In front of the net, middle Adrianne Bynoe combined for five total blocks (1 solo, 4 assists) while Benson added four block assists for the Highlanders.

Sophomore Mallory Mattingly was the lone Dolphin to notch double-digit kills with 11 followed by Olga Nushtayeva (8) and Amarrah Cooks and Jessica Armstrong (6).

Setter Alleah Stamatis piled up 31 assists while defensively libero Mackenzie Swan paced the match with 18 digs followed by Natalie Wehner (10).

The Dolphins held a 9-2 service ace advantage led by Mattingly with a match-best six.

In the first set, both teams exchanged points throughout the early part of the set, which saw ties in the score on six separate occasions. Tied at 9-9, the Dolphins went on a seven-point run highlighted by back-to-back-to-back service aces from Mattingly to give Jacksonville a 16-9 advantage.

The Dolphins used a late 5-2 run to surge ahead, 23-15. After a timeout by the Highlanders, NJIT went on a short 4-1 run, but the Dolphins scored the final point on a kill by Armstrong and held on for a 25-19 victory.

NJIT opened the second frame on 7-3 run, resulting in a Jacksonville timeout. Jacksonville used a 4-1 run to pull within one of the Highlanders, 10-11.

The Dolphins battled back to tie the set at 17 but NJIT regained the lead, 19-17, to force the Dolphins to take its second timeout of the set. The set saw four additional ties, the final at 23-all on a kill by NJIT's Albyn.  A block assist from Jacksonville and an NJIT attacking error, put the Dolphins ahead, 2-0, with a 25-23 victory.

In the third frame, Jacksonville took control early, jumping ahead 12-6.  After a Highlander timeout, the teams went back-and-forth, with NJIT scoring three consecutive late, slimming the Dolphin lead to five, 14-19.  Jacksonville closed out the set on a 6-3 spurt to take the set, 25-17.

NJIT will travel to Stetson on October 6 and FGCU on October 7.  Both matches will begin at 6pm.  The match at Stetson will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
