PHILADELPHIA, PA – The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams opened the 2017 season competing in the Philadelphia Invitational held at Penn on Saturday.
The men went 1-4 on the day defeating Lafayette 20-7 and falling to Duke 17-10, North Carolina 14-13, NYU 17-10 and host Penn 23-4.
On the women's side, the Highlanders fell to Duke 24-3, Cornell, 25-2, North Carolina 22-5 and NYU 23-4.
Highlanders junior
Jule Shigihara and sophomore
Maria Sztan posted identical 7-5 records on the day.
Shigihara went 3-0 against North Carolina and 2-1 against NYU on the foil strip while Sztan notched a 2-1 record gainst Duke, North Carolina and NYU on the epee strip.
For the NJIT men, senior
Ryan Hrapsky combined for a 7-4 record in the epee competition, going 2-1 against Duke and NYU while sweeping North Carolina, 3-0.
Posting an 8-7 record was sophomore
Chris Saulys, who went undefeated (3-0) against Lafayette and 2-1 over Duke and North Carolina on the foil strip.
In men's saber,
Tristan Quinton and
Xiv Paragas each went 2-1 against Lafayette to help the Highlanders grab its only win of the day.
NJIT will return to action when the Highlanders compete at the Eric Sollee Invitational on February 5. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8am.
