UNION, NJ—Despite some late scoring opportunities both ways, NJIT and visiting Quinnipiac played to a 2-2 draw through 110 minutes in non-conference women's soccer Friday on Kean University's Alumni Field.
Friday's 2-2 double overtime outcome is the first for both squads, leaving NJIT and Quinnipiac with a 2-0-1 overall record to start the 2016 season.
NJIT had a 28-11 advantage in total shots, including 11-8 in shots on goal. NJIT's 5-foot-9 senior goalkeeper
Karen David stopped six Bobcat shots.
On the other end, Quinnipiac used two goalkeepers – Charlotte Edmunds and Olivia Myszewski, both freshmen. Charlotte started the match, registering four saves and was credited with the two NJIT goals while Myszewski played the final 65 minutes, recording five saves.
The home team struck first in the ninth minute on a goal by sophomore
Neema Liverpool, her third of the season. Liverpool, who has netted a goal in each of the Highlanders three matches, received a long cross from sophomore
Arianna Gerber from the left side, settled the ball inside the box and scored to the left of Quinnipiac's keeper for the first goal of the match. Gerber collected her team-leading third assist.
Two minutes after the Highlanders goal, sophomore Alex Gilgori blasted a 20-yard shot from the left side, which hit off the goalpost.
Quinnipiac's first scoring opportunity came in the 25
th minute, on a clear shot by sophomore Jess Gargan inside the box, but Gargan's shot hit the crossbar.
The Highlanders went up 2-0 after NJIT's Gerber scored her first goal of the season, lifting the 20-yard shot over Quinnipiac's goalkeeper at 34:23.
The Bobcats got on the board 14 seconds later, on a goal by freshman Ally Grunstein, who carried the ball up the goal line and scored to the left of NJIT's keeper. The goal for Grunstein was the first of the season.
Quinnipiac's Grunstein netted her second goal of the match in the 40
th minute off a rebound from her initial shot, which was saved by NJIT's David and. Grunstein followed with a short shot from the baseline for a 2-2 tie.
NJIT's David made a diving save in the 59
th minute on a point blank shot by sophomore Nadya Gill.
The Highlanders were denied near the end of regular time. First, in the 73
rd minute, NJIT freshman
Fiorella Doglio served the ball into the box off a corner kick and a header by
Lizzy Wolfe was blocked by the Quinnipiac defense at the goal line. A 25-yard shot attempted by sophomore
Noelle Batista hit the goalpost in the 78
th minute.
The Highlanders will host Saint Peter's on Monday, August 29 at 4pm at nearby Rutgers-Newark Alumni Field. The Highlanders defeated the Peacocks 5-1 last season in Newark.
With construction for NJIT's Wellness and Events Center ongoing at the University Heights campus in Newark, the match with Saint Peter's was first slated to be played at Kean University's East Campus Field in Union, NJ but was moved due to field conditions.
