Columbia Advances to CIT Final with 80-65 Semifinal Win Over NJIT

Highlanders halted in CIT semifinals for 2nd year in a row

NEW YORK-Columbia's three-time All-Ivy League senior guard Maodo Lo scored a season-high 29 points, leading five double-figure scorers for the Lions in their 80-65 win over visiting NJIT Sunday evening in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Lo, a member of Germany's National Team and a unanimous All-Ivy first-team pick this season, also handed out a team-leading 6 assists and made a game-high 3 steals as Columbia upped its season record to 24-10, breaking the school record for wins in a season that was set in 1950-51.

Along with Lo, Columbia got 16 points from fellow senior Alex Rosenberg; 12 points from senior guard Grant Mullins; and 11 points from 6-foot-10 junior Luke Petrasek and 11 from freshman Lukas Meisner, who also came down with a team-leading 10 rebounds in 27 minutes off the Lions bench.

NJIT, which ends its season at 20-15 after reaching the CIT semifinals for the second year in a row, was led by 18 points from junior Damon Lynn. All of Lynn's points came on 6-for-9 shooting from 3-point distance, which raised his season total of 3-pointers to 116, tying for the most threes in a season all-time by a player from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The total was 10 shy of Lynn's school record 126 made last season when the Highlanders were the nation's only Division I Independent.

Senior point guard Ky Howard, in his final career game as Highlander, added 14 points and 6 assists, while junior forward Tim Coleman scored 11 and tied his career-high with a game-best 14 rebounds. It was the second time in four 2016 CIT games that Coleman has gotten 14 rebounds and it was his eighth double-double of the season.

Scoring did not come easily for either team in the early going and NJIT led 15-10 after Rob Ukawuba drained a 3-point shot from the corner with 8:24 left in the first half. Columbia had misfired on its first nine 3-point tries and was just four first its first 16 from the field overall.

But Lo scored a fast-break layup 15 seconds after the Ukawuba three, sparking a 12-0 Columbia run that flipped the 15-10 deficit to a 22-15 lead before NJIT's Lynn made a 3-pointer to break the drought at 3:24, exactly five minutes after Ukawuba's score.

The Highlanders would trail the rest of the game, going down 33-22 when Columbia's Mullins made a 3-pointer just ahead of the halftime buzzer.

Lo, who scored a game-high 20 points when Columbia defeated the Highlanders 65-56 early in the regular season on December 12, 2015, led all scorers in the first half Sunday night with 13 points, followed by 9 for Rosenberg. Lynn, with 6 points, was tops for NJIT at the break.

Trailing by 11 at the half, started the second half with a 7-2 spurt to close the score to 35-29 less than a minute in, but Lo answered with a 3-pointer to help keep the visitors at bay.

NJIT closed the gap to 40-35 when Coleman made the first of two free throws with 16:1 left and the Highlanders got closer yet, 42-38, when Chris Jenkins made a 3-pointer with 14:32 left.

Again, however, Lo shifted the momentum back to the Lions, answering with a three of his own just after Jenkins had hit for NJIT. The Lo triple began a 6-0 spurt that pushed Columbia's advantage back to double-digits, 48-38, with 13:09 on the clock.

Columbia led by at least 10 points the rest of the way, except for a 68-second spell after a Lynn 3-pointer got the Highlanders back to a 62-53 deficit. Rosenberg made a 3-pointer at the 5:12 mark and Columbia used a 7-0 spurt to push its lead to 69-53 with 4:04 left.

The Lions have been selected to host the CIT championship game on Tuesday night, where they will take on the winner of Sunday's second semifinal between UC Irvine and Coastal Carolina.

NJIT meanwhile completes the season with its second 20-win season in a row, as NJIT was 21-12 last year and 20-15 this year. The Highlanders, who completed their first season as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference tied for second place, reached the CIT's semifinals for a second year in a row and played a school-record 35 games.

Howard and fellow senior Emmanuel Tselentakis played their final games for the Highlanders, while a third senior, Winfield Willis, who started all 33 games last season and the first nine games this season, had his career end prematurely after he ruptured his achilles tendon in a game vs. Kent State on December 7. He had scored a season-high 23 points in the game prior to Kent State.

Numerous individual landmarks were reached and records were set by members of this year's team:

* Howard and Coleman both became 1,000-point career scorers, with Howard finishing his career with 1,139 points and Coleman completing his junior year with 1,053 points.

* Howard also became the program's career leader in assists (416) and set a new program season record with 154 assists. He also ended with 535 career rebounds.

* Coleman set a new program season rebounds record with 262 and has 548 career rebounds to go with his 1,053 points entering his senior year.

* Lynn, the prolific junior guard, set a new program record with 642 points, 64 more than old record, which he set last year as a sophomore. He will enter his senior season with 1,720 career points.

* Lynn has made 349 career 3-point baskets for the Highlanders, one more than Oklahoma senior Buddy Hield and two behind the active Division I career leader, senior Brian Sullivan of Davidson.
