Kramer Drives In Game-Winning Run; Highlanders Edge Coppin State, 5-4, in 10 Innings

HANOVER, MD—NJIT's Cody Kramer drove in the game-winning run in the top of the tenth, enabling the Highlanders to edge Coppin State, 5-4, and sweep the three-game non-conference baseball weekend series at Joe Cannon Stadium.

NJIT swept a pair from Coppin State on Saturday, 9-2 and 3-2.

Coppin State (1-13) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at 4-4, setting up a result that wasn't resolved until the 10th.

The Highlanders (6-8) began the game-winning frame when senior DH Stephan Halibej doubled to center field.  Pinch runner Rex MacMillan replaced Halibej and MacMillan scored the winning run on an RBI single to center from Kramer.

As a result, RHP Tommy Derer, who retired the last nine batters in the final two innings, earned credit for the win to go to 1-0 on the season.

Coppin State used four pitchers, beginning with starter Devin Rivera Ozuna.  Krystian Negron, the third pitcher on the day, went 4.2 innings, holding the Highlanders scoreless, while walking one and striking out three.  John Craft was charged with the loss (0-1) after pitching the last 1.1 innings and giving up three hits and the winning run.

The Highlanders starter, RHP junior Bryan Haberstroh, did not figure in the decision, but allowed two runs in 5.0 innings, as he scattered four hits and three walks, while notching four strikeouts.

Coppin State collected 10 hits, led by three each from 3B Bryant Miranda and RF George Dragon.

The Highlanders recorded 8 hits, paced by DH Stephan Halibej, who finished 2-for-4, including a double in the tenth.  Six different Highlanders each had a hit – CF Jesse Uttendorfer (1-for-4), LF Evan Pietronico (1-for-5; 2 RBI), 1B Michael Anastasia (1-for-4), Kramer (1-for-4; game-winning RBI), SS Justin Etts (1-for-5) and 3B Tom Brady (1-for-4, RBI).

NJIT put up three runs in the first inning keyed by Pietronico's two-run triple to right center field, Pietronico later scored on a wild pitch, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Coppin State scored two in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Colin Dower through the right side.  With runners at the corners, Dower stole second and Malik White came home to score for the home teams' second run of the game.

NJIT's Kramer reached base on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the fourth and would score on a RBI double to right center from Brady that gave the Highlanders a 4-2 lead.

The Eagles scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of singles.

Coppin State rallied in the eighth to tie the score at 4-4.  Bryant Miranda led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch followed by a single to right field by George Dragon, advancing Miranda to third.  Nazier McILwain drove in the tying, run on a fielder's choice.

NJIT will return to action on Tuesday when the Highlanders visit The George Washington University in Washington, DC at 3pm.  Head coach Brian Guiliana is a graduate of George Washington, where he was the recipient of both an academic and an athletic scholarship and was a captain of the GW baseball team, which he led in home runs as a senior.
