PHILADELPHIA, PA – The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday.
The Highlander men went 3-1 on the day, including a 16-11 win over #9 Duke. NJIT also defeated UNC 18-9, Lafayette 20-7 and lost to Penn 7-20.
Against Duke,
David Kong recorded a 3-0, while
Simon Rizell,
Nicholas Concepcion,
Gal Gluhic and
Cole Degeorges posted 2-1 records in the win. Other Highlanders that competed against Duke were
Tristan Quinton, Trtistan Decker,
Ege Ayan and
Robert Slawinski.
The foil squad went 3-1 on the day and were led by freshman
Chris Saulys who posted a 6-0 record and freshman Concepcion who compiled an overall record of 10-2. Also competing for the foil squad were
Maxwell Miller who tallied a 5-2 record, while junior Kong finished 3-2, and sophomore Rizell an even 3-3.
Junior
Ryan Hrapsky went 2-1 against UNC and 3-0 against Lafayette on the epee strip, while freshman
Tristan Decker posted a 4-2 overall record.
On the sabre strip sophomore Degeorges went 6-6 while freshman
Greg Puccio finished 2-2 on the day.
The women went 0-4 against UNC, FDU, Cornell and Drew.
Sophomore
Jule Shigihara was the women's top performer, securing a 6-0 overall record over UNC and Cornell on the foil strip.
Maria Sztan went 2-0 against Drew on the foil strip, and posted a 5-4 record on the epee strip, going 7-4 overall at the invitational.
Up next for the men is the MACFA Conference Championships on February 28 at Durkan Fencing Academy, and both the men and the women will compete at the NCAA Regionals March 12-13.
