Lomeli Scores Program High Four Goals in Loss to Vermont

MADISON, NJ
– Sophomore Joe Lomeli scored a career and NJIT men's lacrosse program high four goals in NJIT's 19-5 loss to Vermont on Tuesday at Ranger Stadium on the campus of Drew University.

The Highlanders (2-0) kept it a close game going into halftime 5-5, but with 14 unanswered goals by the Catamounts, UVM (1-1) would come out the victor with a score of 19-5.

NJIT was led by Lomeli's four goals. Lomeli extends his scoring streak to 14 games, which started on February 20, 2015 against Stony Brook. Freshman Ryan Darrow also tallied a goal for the Highlanders.

The Catamounts were led by James Barlow who recorded six goals and two assists. Cam Milligan and Ian MacKay also contributed three goals and two assists each.

In a close first period, Cam Stafford would open the scoring for UVM off a pass from Barlow in the 12th minute. Lomeli would answer back in the 7th minute with his first goal of the game. The Catamounts went ahead 3-1 with goals within a minute of each other, but Lomeli kept the Highlanders within one, ending the first period with UVM leading 3-2.

NJIT would pull ahead in the second period with two unassisted goals by Darrow and Lomeli. MacKay would even the score up at four, and Dames Milchling would put the Catamounts up by one. Lomeli scored his final goal of the game in the 5th minute of the third period, making the score 5-5 going into the half.

UVM scored 14 unanswered goals in the third and fourth periods to win the game 19-5.

Highlander goalie sophomore Nick Marzullo tallied 12 saves in the loss, while freshman Cameron Cronk also got some time between the pipes.

For the Catamounts Jon Kaplan recorded the win with five saves, without letting up a goal, while Justin Rosenberg recorded six saves.

NJIT will travel to Princeton, NJ next on February 20 for a 3pm start against the Tigers.
