Volleyball Picks Up 10th Win of Season; Sweeps Delaware State in Non-Conference Finale


DOVER, DE—NJIT women's volleyball won its final non-conference match of the season Tuesday night, sweeping Delaware State, 3-0, at Memorial Hall.

NJIT picks up its 10th win of the season, snapping a five-match skid and improving to 10-21 on the season, topping the Hornets in straight sets, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-22.  Delaware State drops to 1-28 on the season.

The Highlanders will conclude the 2016 season this weekend when the Highlanders host ASUN opponents Stetson on Friday at 5pm and Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at 1pm.  NJIT will recognize its three graduating seniors – Anneka Harris, Katarzyna Klocek and Weronika Wiezik prior to the start of the match on Sunday.

The victorious Highlanders were paced by junior middle Tess Albyn, the lone Highlander to reach double-digit kills, combining for 11.  Senior Weronika Wiezik followed with eight and junior Mikalah Hughes with six.

Freshman setter Liz Benson was one dig shy a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs while sophomore libero Adriana Nieto led the match on the defensive end with 12 digs.

NJIT's Benson and Wiezik each notched three aces as the Highlanders held a 6-1 advantage in service ace category.

Harris was the team-leader for the Highlanders with four block assists.

Delaware State's Jae Jackson led the Hornets with eight kills while setter Gabriella Enriquez piled up 22 assists and added five digs.

Alliyah McBean notched 10 digs followed by Sabrina Szmajduch (9) and Mackenzie Van Hienen (5) and NaKia Jones (5).

The Hornets held a slight team blocking advantage, 9-to-6, led by Jones with five block assists followed by Jenessa Helu and Jackson with four apiece.
