JACKSONVILLE, FL—Jacksonville swept visiting NJIT, 3-0, Saturday evening in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at the Historic Swisher Gymnasium.
With the win, Jacksonville secured its fifth-consecutive trip to the ASUN Conference tournament, improving to 5-7 in the ASUN and 9-16 overall while the Highlanders fell to 1-11 in the ASUN and 9-21 overall with three remaining matches on the regular season schedule.
Jacksonville, which won in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18 and 28-26, hit an impressive .328 for the match, paced by redshirt senior Jizzyan Gesualdo, who was one kill shy a triple double, combining for 28 assists, 17 digs and nine kills. Gesualdo finished the match with a .429 hitting percentage on 21 attempts with no errors for the Dolphins.
Mallory Mattingly led the match, notching a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs while Jessica Armstrong followed with 12 kills.
Defensively for the Dolphins, Gesualdo paced the match with 17 digs followed by Mattingly (11) and Mackenzie Swan (10).
NJIT senior
Weronika Wiezik was the lone Highlander to reach double-digit kill totals with 10 followed by
Katarzyna Klocek,
Tess Albyn and
Anneka Harris, each notching six kills apiece.
Freshman setter
Liz Benson recorded her eighth double-double of the season, combining for 23 assists and 10 digs.
Sophomore libero
Adriana Nieto notched a team-best 14 digs followed by Benson with 10.
In front of the net, Wiezik paced NJIT with four block assists followed by Harris and Mikalah Harris with three assists apiece.
In the first frame, the Dolphins jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The visitors rallied back and pulled within one, 6-7, but Jacksonville went on another 6-2 spurt fueled by two more kills from Gesualdo.
The Highlanders closed the Dolphin gap to within two, 11-13, but a 6-0 run from Jacksonville put the set out of reach as Jacksonville went on to win 25-16.
The second set was much closer early on than the first with four ties and four lead changes. NJIT tied the set twice, and led by two, 8-6 on a kill by Wiezik. Jacksonville closed the set with a 19-10 run as the Dolphins went ahead, 2-0, with a 25-18 victory.
In the final set, Jacksonville began the match with a 5-1 advantage. The Highlanders used a 12-8 run to tie up the match at 13-13, and took the lead for the first time at 16-15. Both teams traded points late in the match as the Highlanders forced extra points, but Jacksonville was able to hold on, scoring the final three points of the match for a 28-26 victory.
NJIT will close out out the non-conference portion of its schedule on November 8 at Delaware State.
