NEWARK, NJ – David Ferrero scored with 14 seconds left to go in overtime to give the NJIT men's ice hockey team a dramatic 6-5 comeback victory over Millersville on Friday at the Barnabas Health Hockey House.
The victory ends a two-game losing skid and also gives the Highlanders (8-8-1) their first victory over the Marauders since the Colonial States College Hockey was formed.
Joining Ferrero in scoring was
Thomas Mudry,
Michael Crincoli and
Christopher Murphy who recorded his first hat-trick of the season and
Thomas Mudry.
Will Hoer added three assists in the win.
Millersville started the scoring in the first period to get an early 1-0 lead. But almost three minutes later junior Murphy scored to tie the game at 1-1 and which was the score at the end of the first intermission.
Millersville regained their lead at 2-1 in the opening minute of the second period.
Junior Crincoli tied the game at 2-2 midway through the period with assists from
Mustafa Bahce and
Daniel Makowski.
The Marauders answered back less than a minute later to take the lead again at 3-2.
Murphy tallied his second goal of the night five minutes later and the game was once again squared at 3. Millersville got two late goals to take a 5-3 advantage going into halftime.
In the third, junior Mudry cut the deficit to one goal off a rebound shot from
James Lyle.
With less than two minutes to go in the contest, Murphy completed his hat trick off a cross-ice feed from
Will Hoer to tie the game for the Highlanders, sending the game into overtime.
At the end of the first overtime, Ferrero was able to race by the defense and blast a shot past the Millersville goalkeeper to give NJIT a dramatic and big conference win.
Matthew Altomare made 41 saves for the Highlanders.
NJIT's next game will be Saturday November 19 at the Barnabas Health Hockey House against Scranton at 8:30pm.
