NEWARK, NJ—Visiting North Florida swept NJIT, 3-0, in women's volleyball ASUN Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
North Florida, which won its third straight match, improves to 13-8 overall and 3-2 in league play while the Highlanders drop to 8-13 overall and 0-5 in the ASUN.
The Ospreys won in straight sets Sunday – 25-18, 25-22 and 25-10, paced by freshman outside hitter Gabby O'Connell with a match-best 10 kills. Junior Carinne Turner nearly missed, notching double-figure kill totals, adding nine.
Senior middle blocker Morgan Van Alstine finished with a .429 hitting percentage, combining for seven kills on 14 swings with just one error.
Sophomore Osprey setter Madilyn McCarty just missed, posting a double-double with 28 assists and nine digs. Ashley Laborde led UNF with 12 digs.
UNF held a 9-1 service ace advantage paced by O'Connell's four followed by Kimberly Ferguson with two. NJIT's
Weronika Wiezik recorded the lone ace for the Highlanders.
Defensively, senior middle blocker Erin Edwards led the Ospreys in front of the net with four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assists) while three different players – O'Connell, Van Alstine and McCarthy each combined for three total blocks.
The Highlanders were led by senior
Katarzyna Klocek with nine digs followed by
Tess Albyn (8) and
Mikalah Hughes (7). Hughes, the Highlanders junior middle blocker, hit an impressive .455 with seven kills on 11 attempts with two errors and paced NJIT with three block assists.
Freshman setter
Liz Benson recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 22 assists and 10 digs for NJIT.
On the defensive end, sophomore libero
Adriana Nieto led the match with 22 digs, notching her 17
th match this season, recording double-figure dig totals. In addition to Nieto's 22 digs, Wiezik and Benson followed with 11 and 10 digs respectively.
The Ospreys hit .250 in the opening frame, jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage and later extended its lead to 19-12 and went on to win, 25-18. UNF's O'Connell led the set with eight kills.
In the second set, UNF got off on fire, leading 12-5, after five unanswered points. The Highlanders rallied back, slimming the Osprey lead to five, 10-15, after four straight points by the home team. Late in the frame, UNF held a 24-17 advantage, but the Highlanders battled back, scoring five straight points, pulling within two, 22-24, resulting in a timeout by UNF. UNF's O'Connell put down a kill for the final point of the set for a 25-22 lead.
The third set, saw two ties and one lead change early in the frame. After a 4-4 tie, the Ospreys went ahead 13-7 and 16-8, cruising to a 25-10 victory. UNF scored the final eight points of the match, securing the 3-0 win.
NJIT will return to action on Friday, October 14 when the Highlanders visit Lipscomb at 6:30pm (CT).
