PHILADELPHIA – NJIT men's ice hockey fell 8-7 to UPenn in overtime Saturday at the Class of 1923 Rink.
The Highlanders went up 2-0 early in the first with goals by
David Ferrero and
Matthew Lepinski. The Quakers came back with two goals of their own, one at the buzzer, to tie the score 2-2 going into the second period.
UPenn went on to score three more unanswered goals before NJIT bounced back to come within one, with freshman
Eric Busler's first goal of the season, and another goal from
Domenico Crincoli, making the score 5-4 after two periods.
The Highlanders tied it up only 21 seconds into the third period on Ferrero's second goal of the day. The back and forth play continued when the Quakers came right back to regain the lead, but NJIT took back the lead with two power play goals by defenseman
Will Hoer to make it 7-6.
With plenty of time to play in the third, UPenn tied it up on a power play goal of their own with the score ending 7-7 in regulation time
The 4 v 4 overtime almost ended in the Highlanders favor after the puck narrowly missed sliding into the Quakers open net, but UPenn came back down the ice to net the game winner with 35 seconds left.
Matthew Altomare notched 42 saves in the loss and Ferrero and Hoer each posted two goals and two assists each.
