NASHVILLE, TN—Lipscomb clinched a spot in the 2016 ASUN Women's Soccer Conference Tournament with a 3-0 victory over visiting NJIT Saturday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, ending the Highlanders chances of advancing to the ASUN Tournament for the first-time in program history.
In the Highlanders first season under head coach
Ally Nick, NJIT saw numerous improvements from a year ago:
--Finished 6-9-3, 2-5 in the ASUN, surpassed their wins output from a year ago, when the team finished 2-14.
--Recorded program's first ASUN Conference victory with 3-0 victory at USC Upsate.
--The Highlanders started the season 4-0-2 through the first six matches, the best start in program history.
--NJIT eclipsed their Division I program record for most goals in a season (23), previously held in 2009, netting 24 goals in 2016.
-- NJIT's seven-goal output against Saint Peter's (August 29) was the highest total for the Highlanders since they began competing against a Division I schedule in 2006. The old record, which stood at five goals, came most recently against Saint Peter's in the 2015 season opener. NJIT scored five goals on two other occasions – vs. Delaware State in late October 2009, and first done vs. Howard in October 2007.
Lipscomb (5-1-1 ASUN, 11-4-2) recorded its second straight shutout and fifth overall with the 3-0 victory. The Lady Bisons will either be the first or the second seed, depending on the outcome of Saturday's match between FGCU and North Florida.
The Lady Bisons opened the scoring in the 26
th minute on a cross from junior Natalie DuBoise to freshman Olivia Doak for a 1-0 advantage. The junior headed home her sixth goal of the season while Doak notched her third assist on the season.
Lipscomb went ahead 2-0 in the 33
rd minute as junior Ellen Lundy scored her sixth goal of the season off a cross from sophomore Maycie McKay. The assist for McKay was her team-leading sixth assist.
The Lady Bisons rounded out the scoring, just three minutes into the second period, on a goal by freshman Leah Cernicky, who scored her first collegiate goal, after a scramble in front of the net. McKay was credited with her second assist of the match.
Lipscomb goalkeeper Anna Buhigas recorded her sixth shutout of the season while counterpart
Karen David, who has notched five or more saves in the last seven matches, brings her career total to 170, with six saves Saturday.
Lipscomb out-shot the visiting Highlanders 17-2, with a 9-0 shots-on-goal advantage.
