WALTHAM, MA – NJIT men's fencing team went 5-1 and the Highlander women added some strong individual showings, too, at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis on Saturday.
The men's team defeated host Brandeis 16-11; Haverford 20-7; MIT 17-10; Stevens 21-6; and, Boston College 19-8, but lost to Brown ,17-10.
The women's side went 0-5 as a team, but the women's epee squad topped Haverford, 5-4; MIT 6-3;, and Stevens, 5-4. The foil squad also pulled out a 6-3 win against Haverford.
Junior
David Kong led the men's team with an impressive 17-1 record on the foil strip, with his only loss coming against Brown.
Other standouts for NJIT included sophomore foilist
Simon Rizell, who posted a 14-4 record, and freshman
Greg Puccio, who went 13-3 on the saber strip.
For the epee squad, freshman
Ege Ayan recorded an 8-4 overall record.
On the women's side, sophomores
Jule Shigihara and
Julia Garcia were NJIT's top performers, as Shigihara went 15-3 in foil competition, while Garcia was 14-3 on the epee strip.
Freshman
Maria Sztan recorded a 9-8 record on the epee strip.
On Saturday, February 7, men's fencing will compete at the MACFA B Round Robin hosted by Stevens, while the women travel to Teaneck, NJ to participate in the FDU invitational.
