BRONX, NY—The NJIT men's soccer team went on the road to Fordham and came back with a scoreless tie after 110 minutes against the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion Rams Saturday night.
The result was the first scoreless tie of the season for NJIT, which now owns a record of 2-4-2. The Highlanders have gone to extra time four times, losing at St. Bonaventure, winning at home vs. Niagara, and tying twice, with a 2-2 home result against Manhattan preceding Saturday's scoreless draw at Fordham.
The Rams are 2-3-3 now and they, too, have gone to overtime on four occasions, finishing with a loss and three ties. Fordham had tied Lafayette, 0-0, on September 12 at Lafayette.
Fordham, which began the season 0-3 is 2-0-3 in its last five contests, including a 1-0 upset win over #21 Columbia in the game prior to NJIT's visit.
Aiming to build on its big win over Columbia, Fordham had the better of the chances early against NJIT, but the Highlanders, backed by junior goalkeeper
Marco Luna, who was making his second start of the season, held up and kept their sheet clean, as they would for the entire evening.
The Rams had a 6-2 advantage in first-half shots and the Highlanders didn't get a shot of their own until a last-minute flurry in the opening period that saw
Victor Kausch of NJIT take two shots that were saved by Nuhue sandwiched around a pair of corner kicks for the Highlanders.
Luna finished with four saves in recording his first shutout as a Highlander and Fordham keeper Rashid Nuhue finished with three saves.
Fordham outshot the visitors in the second half, 7-4, and each team got one shot apiece in the two overtime periods.
The tie between NJIT and Fordham was par for the course when the teams meet, as this was the third time in four contests all-time that the Rams and Highlanders have finished in a deadlock. They tied 1-1 last season in Newark.
NJIT will continue to play on the road, visiting LIU Brooklyn for a 6 pm game Wednesday in Brooklyn.
