BROOKLYN, NY—Redshirt freshman Romario Guscott's goal off a header in the 66th minute was the only scoring for either team Wednesday night, as LIU Brooklyn edged visiting NJIT 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer.
Guscott, a tall forward, outjumped the NJIT defense and headed the ball into the goal off of a cross out of the right corner to break a scoreless tie and give LIU Brooklyn its first win since September 4. The Blackbirds (3-5-2) had gone 0-4-2 since beating St. Bonaventure back in the first week of September.
With the loss on Wednesday, NJIT's record for 2015 drops to 2-5-2.
Guscott's goal was his third of the season and Filip Nordstrom and Naeem Charles were credited with assists on the play.
Both teams got quality goalkeeping, with redshirt junior Logan Keys stopping five NJIT shots to earn the clean sheet. Keys has allowed just one goal in his four starts this season and that was an own goal against the Blackbirds in his first start against Presbyterian on August 28.
Keys got some help from the woodwork just 51 seconds from time, when a header by
Jimmy Myers of the Highlanders hit off the goalpost.
Earlier, Keys made a point blank save in the 71st minute on a shot by NJIT's
Danny Cordeiro that was so dangerous his teammates momentarily started to celebrate what they thought was a goal an instant before they realized Keys had denied the shot.
On the other end, NJIT keeper
Marco Luna finished with four saves. He kept the deficit at 1-0 when he made a pair of saves in a span of 15 seconds in the 86th minute. He, too, got help from the goal frame, as a shot by LIU's Nahuel Medina hit the post in the 80th minute.
All the late action was preceded by a relatively quiet opening half, with the two sides combining for just three shots on goal and one corner kick in the scoreless first 45 minutes.
NJIT more than doubled its shots output from the first half to the second (7-3) and LIU Brooklyn also increased its frequency of shots, while also earning seven of the eight corner kicks it took for the game.
NJIT's next contest will present a big challenge, as the Highlanders try to get back on track with a home game Saturday at 5 pm vs. unbeaten St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Terriers, who are aiming for a third consecutive trip to the NCAA College Cup championship tournament, are 7-0-2 this season and this week moved into the national Top 25, taking the #22 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division I poll.
St. Francis, which has allowed just one goal all season (in a 1-1 tie at Saint Peter's on September 12) will be playing its final non-conference game of the season when it visits NJIT on Saturday. The two-time defending Northeast Conference champions defeated the Highlanders 2-0 last October 4 in Brooklyn.
