GREAT NECK, NY—The NJIT club ice hockey team kicked off the 2015 season with an impressive 5-3 win against LIU Post at Parkwood Ice Rink.
Christopher Murphy got the season started with a goal as NJIT kept the pressure on the Pioneers. Although they had several chances the score remained 1-0 at the first intermission.
The Highlanders found themselves in hole as LIU Post scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore
Ofir Shoham scored his first career goal on a breakaway to tie the game near the end of the second period.
Andrew Irizarry stopped several good scoring chances to keep the game in control.
Thomas Pyrka entered the game in the second period and continued to shut down the Pioneers allowing only the second goal.
In the meantime, the Highlanders went to work as Senior
Kyle Bendel put in the go ahead goal, which was followed by the first ever goal scored by an international player.
Mustafa Bahce, a freshman from Turkey put home the game winner and freshman
Michael Barrera notched his first goal as well.
NJIT will return to action on September 27 when the Highlanders host Ramapo College in 31 years. After decades without a team, Ramapo has resurrected the once storied program and NJIT has been invited to be part of the festivities.
