NEW BRITAIN, CT—Fairfield swept NJIT 3-0 in the opening match on day two of the Blue Devil Classic hosted by Central Connecticut.
Fairfield won in straight sets 25-21, 25-16 and 25-14 to pick up the first victory of the 2015 season.
The Stags were paced by sophomore outside hitter Skylar Day, who notched a team-best nine kills and nine digs. Classmate Megan Theiller posted eight kills while Megan O'Sullivan and Oyinkansola Akinola each added six kills.
Fairfield used two setters led by sophomore Sydney Buckley with 16 assists while freshman Kiley Lingenfelter piled up 13.
On defense, Day led the Stags with nine digs followed by freshman libero Mallory Bechtold with seven. In front of the net, O'Sullivan's four total blocks (three assists, one solo) led the match.
NJIT was led by senior outside hitter
Danica Vukotic's 11 kills on 27 attempts with four errors for a .259 hitting percentage. Twin sister
Nina Vukotic added eight kills.
Freshman setter
Emily Krachenfels collected a match-best 27 assists. Classmate
Adriana Nieto, the Highlanders libero, dug-up a match-high 11 digs followed by nine from
Danica Vukotic.
The Highlanders had three players combine for two blocks –
Tess Albyn (two assists),
Anneka Harris (one solo, one assist) and
Danica Vukotic (two assists).
Fairfield jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the opening set. NJIT scored the next three points and later pulled within one of the Stags, 9-10, on an error by Fairfield.
The Stags went ahead, 23-16, on a kill by O'Sullivan, but the Highlanders answered with four straight points, pulling within three, 20-23, resulting in a timeout by the Stags. Fairfield finished off the set on a 2-1 run for a 25-21 victory.
Fairfield hit an impressive .406 in the second frame. The Stags started out the set with a 7-3 advantage and cruised to a 25-16 victory.
In the final set, Fairfield scored the opening four points and extended its lead to 14-9. NJIT cut the lead down to three, 14-17, on a kill by
Nina Vukotic but the Stags closed out the match scoring eight unanswered for a 25-14 victory.
NJIT will close out the tournament with a 6:30 pm match against host Central Connecticut.
