Host CCSU Tops Highlanders; Nieto Named to All-Tournament Team

NEW BRITAIN, CT—Host Central Connecticut swept visiting NJIT 3-0 and claimed the 2015 Blue Devil Classic title finishing the weekend tournament with a 3-0 record.

CCSU topped Fairfield on Friday and then defeated Bucknell and NJIT on Saturday.  Fairfield went 1-2 with its lone win over NJIT.

The Blue Devils defeated visiting NJIT in straight sets 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23 to conclude the tournament.

CCSU had a balanced attack led by juniors Nicole Dean and Erika Jones and freshman Raquel Quirarte, each recording seven kills apiece. 

Senior setter Makenna Lommori notched a double-double recording 26 assists and 11 digs. 

Junior Rachel Fish, the Blue Devils libero, led four double-figure players defensively with 19 digs followed by Lindsey Massicotte (11), Lommori (11) and Kaitlyn Kushman (10).

In front of the net, Nicole Dean and Quirarate notched seven digs to lead the Blue Devils.  Dean recorded seven assists while Quirarte added four assists and three solo blocks.

Senior outside hitter Danica Vukotic was the only Highlander to reach double-digits offensively, notching a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.  Nina Vukotic, Danica's twin sister, added eight kills while Tess Albyn and Marija Tosic each combined for five kills.

Freshman setter Emily Krachenfels combined for 25 assists.  Adriana Nieto, the Highlanders libero, who was named to the all-tournament team, combined for a match-best 23 digs. In three career matches played, Nieto recorded 44 digs, with a season-best 23 vs. host CCSU.   Tosic posted 13 digs followed by 12 from Danica Vukotic.

NJIT will return to action on Friday, September 4 when the Highlanders face Valparaiso at 6pm in the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational.  NJIT will face host St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at 10am and close out the tournament against Rider at
4pm.
