NEWARK, NJ—NJIT junior
Markus Schultz finished the 2014-15 season ranked 20
th in the NCAA Division I Men's Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the ITA announced on June 3.
Schultz, from Hägersten, Stockholm, Sweden earns his second consecutive season-end regional ranking from the ITA. As a freshman, Schultz finished the 2012-13 season ranked 18
th, becoming the first NJIT tennis player to achieve a regional ranking since the Highlanders began NCAA Division I competition in 2006-07.
"Markus is one of the best tennis players ever to put on the NJIT uniform," head coach
Ira Miller commented. "He works hard, leads by example, and never stops fighting. His current recognition by the ITA will only lead to bigger and better things for next year. I couldn't be more proud."
The ITA is the governing body of collegiate tennis, providing leadership and structure for the sport at more than 1,200 institutions covering a spectrum of programs from NCAA Divisions I thru III, NAIA and two-year colleges.
At the Division II level, NJIT had two women's tennis players ranked by the ITA –
Iulia Doci (Fall 2005; 3rd) and the late
Fatima Kasem (2004-05; 10th).
Schultz finished the 2014-15 season with an 18-8 overall record (15-5 at first singles, 3-2 in tournament play and 0-1 at sixth singles). The 18 wins for Schultz was the highest win-total in singles competition this season. In doubles play, Schultz recorded a 13-10 overall mark (12-7 at first doubles, 1-2 in tournament play and 0-1 at third doubles).
He captured the Tiger Draw Consolation title at the 46
th Annual Farnsworth Ivy Plus Tournament hosted by Princeton on September 20 and earned NJIT men's tennis outstanding performer at the NJIT Annual Awards Banquet.
