RIVERDALE, NY—NJIT lost a close game to Manhattan Tuesday night, 7-5, despite outshooting the Jaspers 43-32 in men's lacrosse at Gaelic Park.
Manhattan, which recorded its first win of 2015, was led by freshman Andrew Gresham's two goals and two assists. Senior Andrew Hurst registered two goals and an assist, while classmate Marcel Godino added a goal and an assist.
NJIT freshman Joe Lomeli posted two goals for the visiting Highlanders. Lomeli, who leads the team in goals this season with 13, has scored in every game of his collegiate career. Freshman Liam Derkasch tallied a goal and an assist and freshman Conor Lally recorded two assists vs. Manhattan.
The result leaves the victorious Jaspers at 1-10 for the season, while NJIT is 0-9.
In addiion to firing more shots than the home team, the Highlanders also led the game in ground balls 25-18. Freshman Zachary Melillo had five, while freshman Rich Brunje followed up with four.
Goalkeeper Nick Marzullo recorded 10 saves for NJIT while Manhattan freshman Michael Zingaro combined for 12 saves in his first win of the 2015 season.
Jasper junior Jack Fowler won the first faceoff of the game, quickly passing to Hurst, who fed Gresham for a quick-strike first goal of the game.
Seven minutes later, Derkasch put NJIT on the board, taking a pass from Lally and converting to level the score, 1-1.
After four unanswered goals from Manhattan, Highlanders freshman Tyler Baggett scored with one second remaining in the first quarter off a pass from freshman John Roach, ending the period with Manhattan ahead 5-2.
The Highlanders scored the first two goals in the second quarter, with Lomeli's first goal of the game at the 12:02 mark assisted by Lally and a goal from freshman Gabe Giovanello assisted by Derkasch.
Hurst scored the Jaspers' only goal of the quarter at the seven-minute mark and of the second quarter and Manhattan led at the half, 6-4.
Neither team scored for another quarter-and-a-half, until the 10:17 mark of the fourth quarter, when Jasper sophomore Alex Abiog found the back of the net, unassisted.
Lomeli got the Highlanders on the board one more time after a pass from Ryan Bradway in the third minute, closing the gap to 7-5, but Manhattan hung on for the win.
NJIT will return to action on April 7 when the Highlanders visit Lafayette at 7:30 pm.
