NEW YORK—The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams returned to action Friday evening at the Columbia Invitational.
Columbia, the defending NCAA Champion had a clean sweep against FDU, Hunter, Northwestern, Stevens and NJIT. The NJIT men went 2-1 defeating Hunter and Stevens while the NJIT women went 0-3 on the day.
The NJIT foil squad, which consisted of sophomore
Simon Rizell, junior
David Kong and senior
Maxwell Miller swept Hunter (9-0) and picked up a 7-2 victory against Stevens led by Kong, who went 3-0 and Rizell, who combined for a 2-1 record. Kong finished with a 7-2 overall mark followed by Rizell at 6-3.
In epee competition, sophomore
Eduardo Ezcurra put together a strong performance finishing 7-2 on the day going, 3-0 against Hunter and 2-1 against Stevens and Columbia. Freshman
Tristan Decker went a perfect 4-0, picking up two wins against Stevens and a win apiece against Hunter and Columbia.
Newcomer
Greg Puccio paced the saber squad combining for a 7-2 record, sweeping Hunter and Stevens (3-0). Sophomore Cole DeGeorges went 5-4, sweeping Hunter (3-0) and recording a 2-1 record against Stevens.
On the women's side,
Jule Shigihara paced the foil squad, combining for a 5-4 overall mark. Shigihara went 3-0 against Fairleigh Dickinson and picked up wins against Columbia and Northwestern.
Freshman
Maria Sztan led the epee squad with a 5-4 overall record. Sztan went 3-0 against Hunter and picked up a pair of wins against Columbia and Northwestern.
NJIT will break and return to action on November 21 at the Penn Invitational.
