Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jacksonville Defeats Highlanders

JACKSONVILLE, FL—Jacksonville picked up its first 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference women's soccer victory Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win over visiting NJIT.

Marie Weckhurst scored the game's first two goals, once in each half, bringing her season's total to 6 goals to pace the winning Dolphins (1-2-1 Atlantic Sun; 3-7-2 overall). Haley Piggott, a sophomore, completed the scoring for the winners with her first career goal.

NJIT, which also lost 3-0 Friday night across town at North Florida in another Atlantic Sun contest, falls 0-4 in its first season of A-Sun women's soccer, part of a 2-11 overall record.

Weckhurst came into Sunday's game as the only player on her team with more than one goal and she quickly added to her numbers with a tally at 4:17. Weckhurst finished on a crossing pass from Joelle d'Entremont. A sophomore, d'Entremont is one of four JU players from the Maritime provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, specifically.

The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half, but Weckhurst changed that just 76 seconds into the second half, tucking a rebound home for a 2-0 Dolphins lead. Cassie Elmore assisted on the play.

Jacksonville's Pigott rounded out the scoring when she came up with a loose ball after a corner kick and drove it home in the 82nd minute.

The winners used two goalkeepers in blanking NJIT, as starter Sara Wicks made four saves in 82:15 and Brittany Hundley played the last 7:45 without a save.

Samantha Bersett started and went the distance for the Highlanders and she made five saves.

Jacksonville dominated the shots, 26-9, and the corner kicks, 7-2.

Elmore, who assisted on the second Dolphin goal, took a game-high six shots and Weckhurst added five. Alex Gilgorri led the Highlanders with three shots, two of which were on frame.

NJIT, which completed the away portion of the schedule with the two weekend games in Jacksonville, will play its last three contests at home, starting with a Friday 7 pm A-Sun game vs. Stetson on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
