NJIT Completes Undefeated Home Swimming Season

NEWARK, NJ – While celebrating Senior Day, NJIT swimming and diving finished the home season undefeated after beating Howard 176-27 and Manhattan 130.50-74.50 Saturday afternoon in the Fleisher Athletic Center pool. Overall, the Highlanders completed the regular season with an 8-4 record

Senior Gene Tutzauer, in his last home contest as a Highlander, placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in10:39.82 and 5:14.27, respectively. Senior diver David Schmidt did not participate in today's meet as there were no diving events, but he will compete with his team at the CCSA Championships in Georgia.

During the 200-yard freestyle relay, sophomore Michael Sungurov, junior Christian Giglio, junior Maxim Tillman and junior Brian Capozzola, placed first, coming it at 1:27.51.

Capozzola added two more first-place finishes to his day, completing the 50-yard freestyle in 20.95 and the 100-yard freestyle in 46.32.Giglio was second during the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.04 and Sungurov added second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.97) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.70).

Junior Richard Seffrin and Tillman placed 1-2 in both the 100- yard freestyle swimming in 9:59.91 and 10:17.39, respectively, and the 500-yard freestyle, with Seffrin finishing in 4:54.86 and Tillman in 4:58.50.

Freshmen Collin Moore and Scott Quirie each had themselves a pair of first-place finishes. Moore swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.66 and the 100-yard butterfly in 52.80, while Quirie swam the 200 yard IM in 1:58.23 and the 100-yard backstroke in 53.83.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, junior Jonathan Drori was second with a time of 1:04.05, while sophomore teammate Timothy Sullivan swam in 1:08.70 and freshman Alexander Hilsamer in 1:09.18

Sophomore Jack Matusiak tied for third place in the 50-yard freestyle coming in at 22.67. Freshman Edward Mann swam the 200-yard IM in 2:07.28 and sophomore Joseph Pedo finished the 100-yard freestyle in 52.71. In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Adam Bransky finished with a time of 58.84 and junior Joseph Nguyen a time of 1:01.03.
