NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team opened its 2015 campaign hosting the NJIT Winter Invitational on Saturday at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
The two day event will take place at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility on the campus of NJIT. Here is a list of the five teams featured at the Invitational this weekend: Army, Fordham, Seton Hall, LIU Brooklyn and NJIT.
In singles Flight C competition, sophomore
Nathalie Habegger, was the lone Highlanders to pick up a victory in the singles competition, topping LIU Brooklyn's Brittany Thompson, 6-1, 6-2. Senior
Valerie Carroll, making her first collegiate tennis debut for the Highlanders, dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Seton Hall's Isabell Klingert.
In singles Flight A competition, senior
Carolina Zanotta fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to Seton Hall's Luize Strike.
In singles Flight B competition, freshman
Ines Vujkovac dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to LIU Brooklyn's Isabella Wagener. Classmate
Sydney Nowak fell 6-3, 6-1 to Army's Brifget Guenard.
In doubles competition, Vujkovac and Alba Rosas dropped two matches – 8-3 in the first round to Army's sophomore duo Molly Prins and Caroline Lorenzini and 8-5 decision against Seton Hall's Madison Shoemaker and Katie Kim.
NJIT pair Zanotta and Habegger fell in the first round of doubles, 8-5 to Fordham's Leong and Wong but picked up a win over LIU Brooklyn's Wagener and Thompson, 8-4.
Highlander duo Nowak and Carroll dropped two matches— 8-2 decision against Seton Hall's Anna Guryanova and Klingert, and 8-0 against Army's Allyson Hayley and Bridget Guenard.
Competition will continue on Sunday morning at 10am.
