NJIT Tops Ranked Stevens, 3-1

HOBOKEN, NJ—Freshman Jabarry Goodridge's career-high 17 kills led three double-figure hitters for NJIT Tuesday night in a 3-1 win over Stevens in men's volleyball action at Walker Gym.
 
Goodridge led the way for the Highlanders, who also got 13 kills from junior middle Ryan Thomas who hit an impressive .667 and 11 kills from Kajetan Borecki en route to a 25-22, 22-25, 29-27 and 25-16 over Stevens, which is ranked tied for 11th with Stevenson in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III national poll.  The result raised NJIT's season record to 3-1, while the Stevens Ducks fall to 1-3 on the young season.
 
NJIT setter Zak Robben posted a match-leading 48 assists.  The Highlanders held an 11.0-to-6.0 team blocking advantage led by Goodridge (one solo, three assists) and Thomas (four assists).
 
Leading the NJIT defense was junior libero Oren Zyndorf with 11 digs followed by Goodridge (7) and TJ Jurko and Borecki with (6) apiece.
 
Stevens also had three players reach double-figure kill totals Tuesday paced by Gabe Shankweiler with 15 kills followed by Chris Vaughn (13) and Thomas Wright (10).  Kevin Aeckerle piled up 40 assists while leading the Ducks defensively with 9 digs.
 
Stevens notched its lone win of the season against Eastern Mennonite University (3-1) on February 1, playing the first three sets close until the Highlanders clinched the match with a 25-16 win in set four.
 
The opening frame saw seven ties and one lead change, eventually won by the Highlanders, 25-22, led by six kills by Goodridge.  NJIT broke a 20-20 tie on a kill by Goodridge and finished off the first set with back-to-back kills by Thomas and Goodridge for a 25-22 victory.
 
Stevens answered in the second frame, prevailing 25-22, as Shankweiler led the set with 4 kills followed by Vaughn and Wright with 3 apiece.  The set which was played close until the final tie of the frame, 22-22, when the home team rallied off three straight points to take the set, 25-22.
 
The Highlanders gained the upper hand in the third frame, as they needed to go extra points to pull off the win, 29-27.  Chris Kaepernick led the NJIT attack with 5 kills followed by Borecki (4) and Thomas and Goodridge (3).  After 19 ties and 10 lead changes, NJIT earned the 29-27 victory after two consecutive errors by the Ducks.
 
In the final frame, the set was played close until the early teens when the visitors scored five straight points pulling ahead 18-11 in the set, as the Highlanders cruised to a 25-16 victory.
 
NJIT will host NJCU on Friday at 7pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
