NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams hosted its annual NJIT Invitational Sunday at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
The NJIT men competed against four opponents (Drew, Lafayette, Rutgers and Cornell) while the women faced five opponents (Queens, FDU, Lafayette, Rutgers and Army.
The men went 2-2 Sunday picking up wins against Drew (17-10) and Rutgers (16-11) while the women went 2-3 with wins against Queens (22-5) and Army (17-10).
NJIT's men top performer was freshman
David Kong, who finished the Invitational with an 11-1 overall mark on the foil and epee strip. Kong went 5-1 at foil and a perfect 6-0 at epee. He went 2-1 against Rutgers and 3-0 against Cornell on the foil strip while recording a 3-0 mark against Drew and Lafayette in epee competition.
Sophomore
Maxwell Miller recorded a 7-5 mark for the foil squad picking up two wins against Drew and one against Lafayette.
Freshman
Ryan Hrapsky posted a 6-0 mark for the epee squad competing against Rutgers and Cornell while
Christian Aldover and
Alex Sadowski each recorded seven wins for the saber squad.
On the women's side,
Julia Aronov was the top performer for NJIT with an impressive 12-1 overall mark for the epee squad. She recorded 3-0 records against Rutgers and Army, 2-0 mark against Queens and Lafayette and notched a 2-1 record against FDU.
Rebecca Richmond, also on the epee squad recorded a 10-3 record with two 3-0 marks against FDU and Army and a 2-0 record against Queens.
Senior
Margaret Christian was the top performer on the saber squad notching 8 wins while freshman
Alessandra Rodrigues recorded 7 wins for the foil squad.
Michelle Potestio earned a 5-9 mark on the foil strip.
The NJIT women will return to action on March 1 at the NIWFA Championships hosted by Army while the men return to action on March 2 at the MACFA Championships also hosted by Army at West Point, NY.
