Highlanders Win On the Road At Bryant

SMITHFIELD, RI— The NJIT men's swimming and diving team defeated Bryant, 137-125, Sunday afternoon.

The visiting Highlanders won the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, which consisted of Brian Capozzola, Christian Giglio, Michael Sungurov and Anthony Czar, who clocked in with a time, 3:12.25, setting a new record at Bryant pool.

NJIT broke four Bulldog pool records and five NJIT school records in the victory.

Freshman Scott Quirie won the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.89), setting a Bryant pool record and re-breaking the NJIT school record. Quirie also finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.18 and placed second in the 200-yard IM (1:57.70), breaking two additional NJIT school records.

Richard Seffrin put together a strong performance for the Highlanders taking down the Bulldogs best swimmer on the squad in a come-from-behind victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:43.33, a new Bryant pool record. Seffrin also had two third-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.37) and 200-yard IM (2:01.55).

Junior Capozzola returned back to the pool for the first this season and captured the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.35, a new Bryant pool record.

Sophomore Czar recorded a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (48.40), second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:16.47) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.35).

Setting another NJIT school record was Collin Moore in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.82. The freshman placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.05 and added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:47.81.

The 200-yard medley team which consisted of Quirie, Seffrin, Moore and Capozzola came in second with a time of 1:38.99, for a new NJIT school record.

Freshman Maxim Tillman placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle clocking in with a time of 10:09.73.

Senior Christan Giglio posted two second-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (53.71) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.21).  Sophomore Michael Sungurov picked up two third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.57) and 100-yard freestyle (50.21).

Other notable Highlanders were senior Gene Tutzauer, who placed fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle.  Sophomore Jack Matusiak finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke while junior Joseph Nguyen took fifth in the 200-yard butterfly.  Freshman Edward Mann took fifth in the 200-yard backstroke.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Jonathan Drori placed fourth and sophomore Timothy Sullivan finished fifth.

"The team pulled out a hard fought victory against a strong Bryant squad.", head coach Michael Lawson commented after the meet. "The team really showed how much heart they have and what great things we can expect later this season."

NJIT will return to action at the ECAC warm-up in East Meadow, NY on December 5-7.
