Danica Vukotic and
Nina Vukotic combined for 21 kills and visiting NJIT swept Delaware State, 3-0, in women's volleyball action Friday night at Memorial Hall.
The Highlanders, who hit a season-best .415, picked up their second straight 3-0 victory, topping the Hornets in straight sets, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17. The result left NJIT at 6-13 overall while Delaware State dropped to 0-12.
Middle
Nina Vukotic produced a match-best 11 kills, with just one error on 19 swings for an impressive .526 hitting percentage.
Danica Vukotic added 10 kills, as the two juniors from Serbia recorded four digs apiece.
Fran Edmondson and
Kat Janssen added seven kills apiece, while
Valerie Carroll picked up five kills with just one error on 11 attempts. Freshman setter
Alyssa Armada just missed notching a double-double, with a match-high 34 assists and nine digs. Senior libero
Camilla Tinari added eight digs for the Highlanders.
Janssen and Edmondson combined for 11 total blocks posting six and five block assists respectively.
Danica Vukotic shared match-best honors posting three service aces.
Nevershi Ellis and Jae Jackson led the Delaware State attack, recording seven kills each, while the Hornets used two setters, paced by Natalia Mendieta's 13 assists, followed by Taylor Marshall's 10. Ayanna Lee led the match with 10 digs.
The first frame featured 11 ties and two lead changes, with the latest tie at 22-22, after a kill by Delaware State. The Highlanders would score the final three points, taking the first set 25-22.
NJIT jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the second set and later pushed its lead to four, 14-10, on a service ace by Armada to start the second set. The Highlanders took a six-point advantage, 20-14, after a kill by
Nina Vukotic, but the Hornets battled back, closing to within two, 20-22. NJIT finished out the set on a 3-1 spurt to earn the win, 25-21.
In the final frame, NJIT scored the opening five points and later went ahead 15-3 after five consecutive points. The Hornets rallied back. slimming the Highlander lead to three, 16-20, behind a 6-0 run. After a timeout by the Highlanders, NJIT closed out the frame on a 5-1 run for the 25-17 victory.
NJIT, which has played 17 of its first 18 matches on the road, will take the short ride to Jersey City, NJ, on Wednesday to visit Saint Peter's at 7pm. In the first meeting between the two teams on September 3, NJIT came out on top 3-1, led by
Danica Vukotic's match-best 17 kills.
The Highlanders return home to host Robert Morris on October 11 at 2pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
