NEWARK, NJ—Sophomore Mara Marhoefer's goal in the 37th minute lifted visiting Cornell to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over NJIT in the final home game of the season for the Highlanders on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium Sunday evening.
The win evened Cornell's season record at 7-7, while NJIT dropped to 3-12-1. Nine of the NJIT losses have come by a margin of one goal, including three defeats in overtime. Only once have the Highlanders yielded more than two goals and they have held 12 opponents to zero or one goal through 90 minutes.
Sunday's win was the fourth 1-0 victory this season for the Big Red, which also has two 1-0 defeats, including a 1-0 Ivy League loss at home against Yale on Saturday afternoon.
The Cornell goal at 36:26 by Marhoefer was assisted by Erin Fitzgerald. The freshman Fitzgerald sent a long through pass into the box, where Marhoefer ran onto it and fired a eight-yarder in stride, sending the ball at a 45-degree angle to the upper left corner. It was her second goal of the season.
The total shots favored the visiting Big Red, 16-3, and the corners were 4-0 for Cornell.
Cornell, which has had 12 of its 14 games decided by one-goal margins (6 wins, 6 losses), snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Highlanders.
Sophomore Dana Daniels went the distance in goal for Cornell and did not need a save to claim the clean sheet. The game was her fourth start of the season, all non-Ivy League games. It was the first time she has played more than 55 minutes in any of her starts.
NJIT's sophomore goalkeeper
Karen David continued her run of strong play, making 11 saves and allowing the one goal vs. Cornell.
David, who made three starts earlier in the season, came on as a sub for injured starter
Samantha Bersett in NJIT's 2-1 win over Delaware State on October 15 with 21:17 remaining and did not allow a goal in that game. She has started the last two, a 0-0 tie vs. Columbia last week and the game vs. Cornell, allowing one goal and making 23 saves in more than 221 minutes since stepping in for Bersett.
The next action on the NJIT schedule is on October 31 and November 2 in the Division I Independent tournament, which will be hosted by Delaware State.
The Highlanders had a game at Lafayette scheduled for October 15 that was postponed. Lafayette is in the thick of its Patriot League home stretch on its schedule, so a makeup of its non-league match vs. NJIT has not yet been scheduled.
