NEW HAVEN, CT—The NJIT men's tennis team opened its 2014 season Saturday with a convincing 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart on the campus of Yale University at Cullman Heyman Tennis Center.
 
The Highlanders (2-0) swept the doubles contests and won five out of six singles contests en route to the 6-1 road victory.  Sacred Heart falls to 0-1 on the young season.
 
NJIT sophomores Erik Artursson and Andres Alban were 8-7(4) winners at first doubles defeating Sacred Heart's Matt Dean and Brian Power.  Alban won in straight sets at third singles, 6-4, 6-2 over Dean while Artursson won by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth spot cruising past Kevin Budrawich.
 
Highlander duo Holger Norregaard and Markus Schultz won 8-3 at second doubles topping Luka Bagi and Anthony Savio.  Schultz, who advanced to the round of 16 at the 2013 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships this past Fall, the furthest any NJIT tennis player has advanced at the ITA tournament, won in straight sets at first singles defeating Sacred Heart's Power, 6-4, 6-0.  Norregaard went the distance at second singles with Pioneers Justin Pagan, dropping the first set, 6-2, but bounced back in the next two frames for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
 
Newcomers Carl Jedlinski and Arnaud Holl made their NJIT debut Saturday topping Sacred Heart's doubles duo Pagan and Budrawich, 8-2.  Jedlinski and Holl, both transfers, joined the Highlander squad in January.  Holl, from Walldorf, Germany, is a transfer from Francis Marion, picked up his first singles victory as a Highlander defeating Bagi, 6-3, 6-1.  Jedlinski, from Manalapan, NJ, is a transfer from Brookdale Community College, but did not play last season, dropped a three-set tilt at sixth singles against Pioneers Savio, 5-6(4), 6-4, 11-9.  Jedlinski attended Monmouth in 2011-12 as a freshman notching 10 wins in singles competition at the third and fourth spot.
 
NJIT will return to action on Sunday hosting Saint Peter's at 4pm in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
