Men’s Ice Hockey 5-2 Victory over Penn Moves NJIT into 1st Place in East Division

NEWARK, NJ—Playing and winning their second game in as many nights at Prudential Center , the Highlanders prevailed over Penn and moved into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division of the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference with a 5-2 victory.

Corrado Mancini got things going with his fifth goal of the weekend, assisted by Christian Corey and Michael Criscitello, who then added his own goal to extend the lead going into the first intermission.  Assists on the second goal went to Mancini and Matthew Smeriglio.

The second period was all Penn, which outshot NJIT, 13-3. But thanks to freshman goaltender Thomas Pyrka, Penn got nothing on the scoreboard to show for its efforts.

The Highlanders made some adjustments going into the third period by moving Criscitello in between Adam Finkle and Domenico Crincoli.  The move paid off as all three of them scored to account for the final score.

Pyrka lost his bid for the first shutout of his career as Penn continued to out-shoot NJIT.  Shots in the third period were 19 for the visitors and eight for the Highlanders.  The final shot totals were 47 -24 in favor of Penn, which emphasizes just how well Pyrka played.
