FAIRFAX, VA—George Mason won its second consecutive 3-0 decision over visiting NJIT Saturday evening in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association men's volleyball action at the RAC.
George Mason won in straight sets, taking the first two frames by identical 25-19 scores, and then 25-16 in the final set for a 3-0 victory. The Patriots improve to an even 5-5 on the season, 3-0 in the EIVA while the Highlanders fall to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Patriots were led by senior right side hitter Mark Jones, who finished with an impressive line, registering a match-high 19 kills on 26 attempts with just one error for a .692 hitting percentage. Andrew Dentler combined for 10 kills while middle blocker Pat Sibley added six kills on 10 swings with two errors and added four total blocks for the home team.
Setter Javier Perez posted 36 assists while Max McFarland led the defense with nine digs followed by seven from Patrick Maloney.
NJIT was paced by
Chris Kaepernick's seven kills, while
Kajetan Borecki and
Doug Battersby each notched six kills. Kaepernick also led the Highlanders with five digs.
Senior setter
Matthew Lui piled up 21 assists and added three digs for the visitors.
The first set remained close until the late teens when the Patriots took a three-point lead, 20-17, resulting in an NJIT timeout. NJIT rallied back taking the next two points, pulling within one, 20-19 but George Mason would score the final five points of the set for a 25-19 victory.
In the second frame, George Mason jumped out to a 17-8 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-19 victory led by Jones' five kills.
To start the third set, the Patriots led early 10-6, but the Highlanders battled back, keeping the set close in the mid-teens. George Mason gained full control after scoring five consecutive points for a 23-14 advantage. The Patriots closed out the match on a kill by Jones for a 25-16 victory.
NJIT will return to action next Friday at 7pm when the Highlanders host Harvard in EIVA conference action at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Crimson have won its previous four contests and stand at 7-2 overall, 3-1 in the conference. Harvard upset No. 9 Penn State on February 15, sweeping the Nittany Lions and snapping a 51-match EIVA win streak for Penn State.
