COLUMBUS,
OH—Michael Henchy led No. 10 Ohio State to a 3-0 victory over visiting NJIT, as the Buckeyes sophomore notched a match-high 20 kills at St. John Arena in men's volleyball non-conference action.
Ohio State (6-2), which captured its first NCAA Division I-II title in 2011, entered the weekend as the No. 10 team in the AVCA Division I-II Men's Top 15 poll, moving up a spot from last week's poll sweeping visiting NJIT in straight sets Friday, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-17.
Henchy, the Buckeyes 6-foot-7 outside hitter, who was named to the Preseason Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) all-Conference team, finished the match hitting .545 with 20 kills on 23 attempts with just two errors while adding five digs.
Chen Levitan posted seven kills and nine digs while Andrew Lutz added six kills. Setter Peter Heinen registered a match-high 35 assists while Brennan Anderson led the Buckeyes defensively with a match-high 11 digs.
NJIT (1-6), which opened the 2013 season competing against six opponents from the MIVA , two of which are nationally ranked (No. 10 Ohio State and No. 15 Lewis) and another receiving votes (Loyola-Chicago) was paced by junior
Herman Kantushov, for the second straight match, with 12 kills and seven digs. Kantushov posted 16 kills in the Highlanders 3-2 loss at Kean on January 29.
Sophomore
Chris Kaepernick posted eight kills while
Kevin Van Oss and
Doug Battersby both recorded five kills apiece.
Kantushov led NJIT defensively with seven digs while three different Highlanders notched four digs – Kaepernick,
Kajetan Borecki and libero
Brady Smith.
In the first set, Ohio State jumped out to a commanding 11-5 lead resulting in an NJIT timeout. The visitors battled back to a 19-14 score and then went on a 3-1 run closing the gap to within three, 20-17, on a kill by Kaepernick.
After a timeout by Ohio State, Henchy recorded back-to-back kills along with kills from Levitan and John Tholen which brought the Buckeyes to set point at 24-19. After an Ohio State error, a kill by Levitan sealed the 25-20 win.
In the second frame, the match remained close until the set was tied at 22. After a kill by NJIT's
Ryan Thomas, the Highlanders took a 23-22 lead but the Buckeyes scored the next three points for a 25-23 victory.
In the final set, Ohio State's Andrew Lutz led the frame with six kills followed by Henchy's four kills as the Buckeyes earned a 25-17 victory closing out the match.
NJIT, which has played its last four contests on the road, will return to action at home hosting Stevens on February 6 at 6pm.
