Adam Gustafson notched a double-double and junior
Doug Battersby hit .706 for the match as the Highlanders defeated visiting Princeton, 3-1, Friday evening in EIVA men's volleyball conference action at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
NJIT (7-10, 3-2 in the EIVA) opened the match with a 25-21 win in the first frame, but Princeton bounced back with a 25-21 win in the second set. The home team made it three straight 25-21 games with a victory in the third and closed the match with a 25-20 win in the final frame.
Gustafson, the lone senior on the NJIT roster, notched his third double-double of the season with 10 kills and 19 assists while Battersby posted a season-high 13 kills on 17 attempts with just one error for a .706 hitting percentage. NJIT had one other player reach double-digits in the kills category Friday –
Herman Kantushov with 11.
Setter
Matthew Lui piled up 26 assists playing in just two sets for the Highlanders. Three Highlanders recorded seven digs – Gustafson,
Chris Kaepernick and libero
Brady Smith. Battersby combined for five block assists followed by Kantushov's four total blocks (three assists, one solo).
Princeton (6-6, 5-4 in EIVA play) was led by a match-high 18 kills from Cody Kessel while sophomore outside Davis Waddell added 13 kills and five digs.
Sophomore Jeff Stapleton recorded seven kills, five digs and three blocks, while junior middle Michael Dye added eight kills and four blocks. Senior setter Scott Liljestrom combined for a match-high 46 assists.
The Highlanders will return to action next Friday at Lees-McRae and King (TN) on Saturday. NJIT hosted Lees-McRae on January 28 defeating the visiting Bobcats, 3-1.
