NEWARK, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team nipped NJIT, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
FDU (6-7), who has won the last three out of four matches, picked up all its points in the singles competition. The Highlanders fall to 11-6 on the season and will host Saint Joseph's on Sunday in the final home match of the season.
The match came down to sixth singles, which featured NJIT's
Fraser Croad and FDU's Dominic Hemy. Croad blanked Hemy in the first set, 6-0, and found himself ahead 3-0 in the second set but it was the Knights Hemy who battled back for the victory taking the second frame, 7-5 and took the match with a 6-3 victory in the final set.
The Highlanders started off the match earning the doubles points with victories at second and third doubles. NJIT's duo
Holger Norregaard and
Ike Kiro defeated FDU's Yuri Gricheno and Dominic Hemy, 8-0 at second spot while
Joao Tasca and
Bryan Keelan followed up with an 8-6 win at third doubles.
The two Highlanders to win in the singles competition were
Petr Rousar, at second singles and Tasca at the fifth spot. Rousar went the distance with FDU's Gricheno, taking the first set, 6-4 and was blanked in the next frame, 6-0. Rousar was a 7-6 (11-9) winner in the final set to earn the point. Tasca, at fifth singles, won in straight sets over FDU's Peter Svarka, 6-4, 7-5.
At fourth singles, NJIT's Kiro played a tight match with FDU's Mark Hemy. Kiro was downed 6-3 in the first set but bounced back in the next frame taking a 7-6 (9-7) victory. Hemy finished off Kiro with a 6-4 victory in the final set.
