Marist Edges NJIT, 4-3

NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the spring season, as Marist edged NJIT, 4-3, Saturday at The The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

The Red Foxes, who are ranked #10 in the Northeast Region and have captured the MAAC Championships the last four consecutive years, won in straight sets at second, third, fourth and fifth singles nipping the Highlanders.
 
In doubles action, the Highlanders earned the point taking first and third doubles.  Highlander duo Petr Rousar and Victor Martinez defeated Marist's Lorenzo Rossi and Matt Himmelsbach, 8-5. 
 
At the third spot, Joao Tasca and Bryan Keelan were 8-3 winners as the Highlanders took two out of three spots.
 
NJIT (3-1), winners of its previous three matches, only managed two victories in the singles competition.  NJIT's Holger Norregaard went the distance at first singles with Marist's Rossi.  Norregaard dropped the first set, 6-3, but bounced back in the next two frames with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
 
The only other win for the Highlanders came at sixth singles as Fraser Croad battled out a three-set silt with Marist's Billy Bishop.  Croad was a 7-6 (5) winner in the first frame but fell 6-1 in the second set.  The sophomore posted a 10-2 victory in the final set for the win.
 
The Highlanders, who will play its next seven matches at home will host Fordham on Thursday, February 9 at 6pm in The The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
