No. 7 Lewis Sweeps Highlanders

NEWARK, NJ – Lewis, ranked 7th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association national men's poll, defeated NJIT, 3-0, Friday evening at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center in men's volleyball non-conference action.
 
With the victory, Lewis improves to 9-3 on the season taking the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19. The Highlanders drop to 5-6 on the season.
 
The Flyers were led by freshmen Aaron Flick and Eric Fitterer with eight kills apiece.  Flick hit .700 for the match with eight kills on 10 attempts with just one error while Greg Petty added six kills for the visitors.
 
Setters BJ Boldog and Eric Butch split time at the setting position notching 16 and 11 assists respectively for Lewis.  Libero Roberto Torres posted a match-high 15 digs followed by Petty with 11.  Junior middle blocker Yiwei Zhou had three total blocks (one solo, two assists) as the Flyers held a 7.5 to 4.0 team blocking advantage.
 
The Highlanders were paced by freshman TJ Jurko with eight kills followed by freshman Chris Kaepernick's seven.  Doug Battersby finished the match with a .667 hitting percentage with six kills on nine attempts and no errors for the home team.
 
Setter Matthew Lui piled up 18 assists in three sets for the Highlanders.  Senior Adam Gustafson and libero Brady Smith led the way defensively for NJIT digging up eight balls apiece.  Gustafson and Battersby each notched three block assists.
 
In the first set, the Highlanders jumped out to a 12-7 lead after a Kaepernick kill, resulting in a timeout by Lewis head coach Dan Friend.  The Flyers pulled to within three of the Highlanders on a kill by Fitterer, for a 15-12 score.  After a kill by Jurko, the Flyers rallied off five straight points and knotted the set at 16 on an NJIT attack error.  NJIT head coach Ryan McNeil called for a timeout and the Highlanders responded with two straight points, taking an 18-16 lead.  Lewis used a 5-1 run and took its first lead of the set, 21-19, on a kill by Geoff Powell.  NJIT was down two at 23-21 and 24-22 but it was Petty who put the first set away, 25-22, on his fourth kill of the set.
 
The second frame went back and forth early until a 10-10 tie, when the visitors scored the next six points stretching their lead to six, 16-10, on a kill by Flick.  The Flyers gradually extended the lead to seven, 21-14, after a service ace by Flick.  With match point on the line for Lewis, 24-17, the Highlanders did not go away scoring three straight points resulting in a Lewis timeout, but the Flyers took the second frame, 25-20, on an NJIT attack error.
 
In the final set, Lewis hit .310 (14k, 5e, 29a) led by Fritter's four kills for a 25-19 victory.
 
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday at 7pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center and host another nationally ranked team, No. 14 Loyola Chicago.
