Men’s Volleyball Edges Kean, 3-2

, NJ –Five different Highlanders reached double-figure kill totals led by freshman Dhruv Lad with 13 as visiting NJIT edged Kean 3-2 in men's volleyball non-conference action Wednesday night at Harwood Arena.

 

In the first meeting between the two teams in Newark, NJIT swept the Cougars, 3-0, on February 8.

 

NJIT started off the match taking the first frame 25-16 led by Kevin Van Oss and Adam Gustafson with four kills.  Kean evened the match 1-1 with a 25-23 victory in the second frame.

 

The Highlanders hit .290 in set three going up 2-1, with a 25-20 win but Kean rallied back to a 29-27 win, before NJIT took the fifth frame, 15-5, for the match.

 

Following Lad's 13 kills was Van Oss with 12 kills on 21 swings and three errors for a .429 hitting percentage.  Van Oss added three service aces and block assists.  Three Highlanders notched 10 kills – Gustafson, Andrei Stoyanow and Herman Kantushov.

 

Sophomore Matthew Lui piled up a season-best 53 assists, adding 13 digs and four block assists.  Gustafson and Stoyanow posted 10 digs apiece defensively for the Highlanders.  Brady Smith and Ryan Blondell combined for 14 digs.

 

Steve Vahalla led Kean's offensive attack with a match-high 28 kills while adding six digs.  Setter Sam Haimann finished with 39 assists and Tom Kemmerle posted 12 digs.

 

The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday when the team hosts Saint Francis (PA) at 2pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.  The teams met earlier in the season and the Red Flash defeated NJIT 3-1, on January 23.
