NEW YORK – NYU nipped visiting NJIT, 3-2, Wednesday night in an EIVA Hay Division conference match at Coles Sports Center.
The Violets, who extend its win streak to five, defeated the Highlanders, 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 19-25 and 15-10 improving to 17-7 overall, 4-3 in the conference.
NYU took the first two sets of the night and held a 22-19 lead in the third set until the Highlanders rallied for an 8-3 spurt to take the set, 27-25.
The momentum then swung back to the visiting team in the fourth frame, as NJIT took a 21-16 lead late in the set. After a timeout by the home team, the Highlanders scored four consecutive points pushing its lead to 24-17. NYU scored the next two points on kills by Patrick Dodd and Tayor Fauntleroy but NJIT scored the final point of the set, 25-19, on a kill by Adam Feehan.
In the final set, the Highlanders found themselves down early, 10-5. NJIT came within three of NYU, 13-10, on a Violet attack error but NYU claimed the set, 15-10, scoring the final two points.
Leading the Highlander attack was freshman Herman Kantushov, who shared match-high honors with NYU's Fauntleroy with 22 kills. Following Kantushov was Feehan with 18.
Junior Adam Gustafson and sophomore Matthew Lui shared setting duties Wednesday. Gustafson piled up 27 assists in five sets while Lui added 25 in three sets. Gustafson also added seven kills and six digs.
Defensively, libero Brady Smith recorded a match-high 20 digs while Kantushov added nine and Feehan posted eight. Kevin Van Oss notched three block assists.
Also contributing to the NYU attack was Dodd (17), Taylor Donovan (16) and Francis Hodgson (10).
Setter Connor Mortland posted a match-high 62 assists while adding eight digs and four block assists. Luke Hamlet notched a match-high five total blocks (one solo, four assists) and Mortland combined for four block assists.
The Highlanders will return home on Saturday and host Juniata at 4pm.
