No. 11 Loyola-Chicago Downs Highlanders, 3-1

NJIT's Matthew Lui posts match-high 29 assists

CHICAGO – No. 11 Loyola University Chicago defeated visiting NJIT 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15) Saturday evening at Alumni Hall in men's volleyball non-conference action.

 

Loyola (15-5) has won its last eight matches at home and is ranked 11th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association national men's poll.

 

Junior outside hitter Teddy Adamczyk posted a match-high 14 kills while teammates Brendan Styler and Domenic Dewaele posted nine kills apiece for Loyola. 

 

Matt Mirick and Kyle Exline split time at the setting position for the Ramblers.  Mirick posted 24 assists followed by 19 from Exline.  Exline had a match-high four service aces for the home team.  Three Ramblers notched seven digs apiece.

 

Leading the way for NJIT was sophomore Doug Battersby with nine kills on 17 swings and just one error for a .471 hitting percentage.  Junior Adam Gustafson added eight kills and Kevin Van Oss posted six kills and five total blocks (one solo, four assists).

 

Sophomore setter Matthew Lui piled up a match-high 29 assists for the Highlanders and posted a team-high five digs.

 

The Highlanders had their most efficient offensive set in the second frame, committing just three errors on 16 swings and 10 kills.

 

NJIT jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the second set on a Rambler service error. Loyola closed the set to within five, 21-16, on a kill by Adamczyk.  After a timeout by head coach Ryan McNeil, Battersby and Gustafson responded with a kill pushing the Highlander lead to 23-17.  NJIT went on to claim by a score of 25-18.

 

NJIT will return to action on Tuesday at 7pm when the Highlanders visit Stevens.
