Men's Ice Hockey

Red Hot NJIT Hockey Falls 4-1 to Scranton, Snaps 4 Game Win Streak

Written by Patrick M. Alvarado

NJIT's Daniel Smith

Following their success in January (5-1-0, 4-0-0 against GNCHC opponents), the Highlanders took to the Ice against Scranton University looking to continue a 4 game winning streak.

Early in the first period Scranton kept the Highlanders on their heels, but they were eager to respond and quickly established their physical game. The heavy hitting continued and it eventually interrupted Scranton's breakout when freshman Daniel Smith ended up with the puck. Going in on the counter rush, a 2-on-1 developed for the Highlanders and Smith ripped a shot beating Scranton goaltender Kevin Murley.

With NJIT leading 1-0, both teams began playing a strong defensive game. However, a turnover out of the defensive zone lead to Scranton's 2-on-0 chance, where Kevin Teevan buried the puck after a cross-ice pass to tie the game 1-1. After killing a couple penalties Scranton was right back at it. The Highlanders had difficulty clearing the defensive zone when Nick Aloise eventually scored a goal giving Scranton a 2-1 lead before the end of the first.

At the start of the second period, NJIT looked to re-establish their physical game again. Despite the chances, NJIT was not able to capitalize, and both teams continued their strong defensive play. There were a couple scary hits in the middle of the second which first saw NJIT sophomore Jason Anagnos went down awkwardly behind the net. After a moment, he eventually stood up on his own and continued to play the rest of the game. Next was Scranton player Peter Cuviello, who was hit into the corner boards after a 1-on-1 chance which was broken up by NJIT Senior Kevin Mahon. Cuviello had to be assisted off the Ice, and didn't return after the second period.

The remainder of the second period continued to follow the same pace. After a couple penalties were killed off, Scranton again got a 2-on-1 chance where Martin Payton shot it home to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the end of the second period. The third period continued the same display of heavy hitting, and many back and forth scoring chances.

Unfortunately the Highlanders were unable to capitalize on any of their chances. As frustrations ran high, the penalties began to pile on both sides. Late in the third, Scranton added to the frustration when Alex Tomann scored to make it 4-1. The game ended with a skirmish in front of Scranton's bench which was broken up by the officials. Afterwards both teams shook hands and went on their way home.

The Highlanders return home Friday February 11, 2011 to play against La Salle at 9:00pm. They then finish the season at home Sunday February 13, 2011 against CW Post at 4:00pm. The Highlanders play in the Amerihealth Pavilion located at the Prudential Center (corner of Mulberry and Lafayette Street).
