NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's volleyball team fell 3-1 to NYU in four sets (20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25- 21) in an Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division matchup Wednesday evening at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Sophomore Doug Battersby was the only Highlander to reach double-figures in the kills category Wednesday with 10. Newcomer Herman Kantushov added nine kills while Andrei Stoyanow posted eight.
Junior setter Adam Gustafson piled up 37 assists for the Highlanders and shared team-high honors with Kantushov with seven digs. Gustafson notched a team-high three service aces.
NYU (7-4, 1-3 EIVA) was paced by three different Violets who combined for 14 kills apiece – Taylor Fauntleroy, Nick Capriccio and Francis Hodgson. Hodgson hit .619 for the match with 14 kills on 21 attempts and one attack error.
Connor Mortland posted a match-high 52 assists while adding seven digs and three block assists. NYU's Jay Hayes notched a match-high 10 digs and Capriccio shared match-high honors with NJIT's Battersby with five block assists in front of the net.
NJIT will return to action on Friday at 7pm when the Highlanders host Lees-McRae in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
