NEWARK, NJ – Andrei Stoyanow paced the Highlanders with a career-best 17 kills leading NJIT to a 3-2 non-conference men's volleyball win over visiting Hunter on Friday in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
NJIT's 3-2 win came on scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13.
Stoyanow's team-best 17 kill totals came on 32 attempts and four errors for a .406 hitting percentage. Junior Adam Gustafson produced a double-double with 13 kills and 32 assists.
Sophomore Kevin Van Oss added 10 kills on 15 attempts and just three errors for a .467 hitting percentage. Van Oss was the top server for NJIT, combining for a match-high four service aces leading the Highlanders to 10 service aces as a team.
Classmate Doug Battersby was one kill shy for a double-double as the 6-foot-5 right side hitter posted nine kills and shared the setting duties with Gustafson finishing with 26 assists. Dhruv Lad notched eight kills.
Rafal Kierznowski was the blocking leader for NJIT picking up three block assists. Sophomore libero Brady Smith dug-up a match-high 13 digs for the Highlanders. Stoyanow added five digs while three different Highlanders recorded four.
Hunter had two players with double-figure kill totals, led by Eric Barty's match-high 18 kills. Braien Otsla had 12 kills for the Hawks while Marcin Polak added nine kills.
Stanley Martinez collected a match-high 44 assists while Otsla was the match leader with six block assists leading the Hawks to a 17-7 blocking advantage in front of the net.
NJIT, now 2-5 overall, will open up EIVA Hay Division conference play on Friday, February 4 at 7pm when the Highlanders travel to Juniata.
